Founded in 1796 as Anderson's Institution, the University of Strathclyde received its royal charter and full university status in 1964 as the UK's first technological university. Based in the heart of Glasgow, Strathclyde has spent over two centuries building on that founding purpose, described in its own mission as 'a place of useful learning.'

Today, Strathclyde stands as Scotland's most industry-connected university, renowned for translating research into real-world impact. Strathclyde's partnerships with industry are what set it apart from other universities, both in the UK and globally, built on over 200 years of working with business and industry. This ethos is embodied in facilities like the university's Technology and Innovation Centre, a hub dedicated to fostering partnerships between academia, industry, and the public sector to address global economic challenges through advanced technology development.

ASHRAE

ASHRAE, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, is a global professional society dedicated to advancing human wellbeing through sustainable technology in the built environment. While ASHRAE's roots lie firmly in HVAC&R engineering, its scope has expanded considerably over the years, now encompassing indoor air quality, energy efficiency, building sustainability, and the broader systems and policies that shape how we design and operate the spaces we live and work in.

This growth reflects a wider shift in the industry itself: as sustainability and energy efficiency have become defining challenges of our time, ASHRAE has evolved from its founding technical focus into a truly interdisciplinary society, one that connects engineers, researchers, architects, and policymakers around a shared mission of building a healthier, more sustainable world.

Our Branch

Our branch exists at the intersection of these two institutions, and few universities are better placed for that role than Strathclyde. As a technological university built on genuine industry collaboration, and with research strength spanning nearly every faculty relevant to ASHRAE's now-expanded scope, Strathclyde offers a uniquely fertile ground for the kind of interdisciplinary, purpose-driven work ASHRAE stands for today.

We bring together students and researchers who share a passion for HVAC&R engineering, indoor environmental quality, and the design of healthy, low-energy buildings. Through this branch, we connect our members with technical knowledge, industry professionals, and an international community working at the forefront of building services and sustainable design, carrying forward both Strathclyde's founding purpose and ASHRAE's evolving mission, together.

This year, as our branch's founding leadership, we're focused on understanding the strengths across our university's departments, engaging meaningfully with our stakeholders, and using that insight to shape a clear, lasting purpose for this branch, one that goes beyond simply existing, and genuinely serves our members, our university, and the wider ASHRAE community. We're not just building a student branch. We're building it with purpose.
